St. Michael’s School

St. Michael’s is a Co-Educational Boarding & Day School and was first established in 1923. Today standing in its own private grounds, the school boasts wonderful views across the Gower Peninsula, well-known for its coastal walks and stunning beaches, so for those students who take pleasure in outdoor activities this is a great location.

The school is well known across the region since it is consistently listed in the UK Top 100 Independent Schools. In the Times Top 100 Co-Educational Independent Schools 2016 St Michaels is ranked 29th for GCSE results and 74th for A Levels. This is a remarkable achievement since in the Primary and Secondary school we are non-selective, offering a holistic education; ensuring we meet the needs and development of every child. However Sixth Form entry to A Level is dependent on successful GCSE results and a small number of scholarships are available to outstanding students.
In St Michaels Senior School we have almost 300 students and the majority are Britis

h with approximately 15% being international students.  Our student body is broad and diverse; students coming from India, Hong Kong, Iran, Indonesia, Russia, Nigeria, Ghana, Iraq, Kazakhstan, South Korea, Spain, Botswana, China and of course Thailand.

Curriculum & Qualifications:
In the Senior School; Years 7-9 students follow Key Stage 3 curriculum and Year 9 is a Foundation Year for the GCSE programme which is studied across years 10-11.
A Levels are studied in Years 12 & 13 and provide the pathway to University.

For our International students, we can offer intensive English in the lower school; Years 7-8. In Year Groups 9-11 students who need additional language support will be provided with 9 ESOL lessons each week alongside their academic programme. IELTS improvement is provided for the Sixth Form students.

Academic Achievements:

Each year we have successful entries to Oxford and Cambridge Universities and every year we see a number of our A Level graduates enter Medical/Dental School and Law school. In 2016 two of our Thai students gained places at Durham University to study Law and we currently have 2 Thai students preparing for entry to Medicine. Almost 80% of our A Level grades achieved by students were either A*/A/B.

Accommodation & Care:

The school has two fully supervised boarding residencies; Parc House for the juniors; Years 7-10 is off campus just 2 km from the school and we provide a daily transfer service.  A former Manor House this accommodates 22 students and is set in its own grounds surrounded by a safe residential area. Juniors have a choice of twin or single rooms. The senior house is on campus and accommodates 41 students, this is largely on a single ensuite room occupancy.  Both properties offer a comfortable and safe learning environment and Houseparents’ maintain a fair but firm system of discipline.
For Seniors; those students aged 18 years old, we offer 2 semi- independent houses where selected students can live and enjoy the facilities of the school but they have slightly more autonomy. The students in the independent house have single room options, but enjoy a shared living area, kitchen and garden. Of course the house is single gender. This is a stepping stone experience to University independence; however the selection of students is subject to your performance at school and the ability to demonstrate that you are ready for this level of responsibility. The two houses are in campus and students eat in the school canteen but over holiday periods they can cater for themselves. The big attraction of this privileged house is the fact that students can remain in the UK over the school holidays.

Leisure Time:

Leisure activities are provided both after school and at weekends, some are compulsory for the younger students but optional for the seniors. The juniors enjoy a variety of different sports each term; football, basketball, badminton and every Saturday we offer tennis at Swansea tennis club. The Activities Manager at the September induction spends time with each new student identifying interests and hobbies and if a student follows a sport we cannot offer, then we will find a local club.

The Seniors; Year 12/13 are provided with membership to a private gym which is just a 20 minute walk from the school and this offers full gym facilities and a swimming pool where lessons are available if required. Adjacent to the gym students also have access to a small shopping centre that has popular retail outlets and a number of small coffee shops.

Outdoor activities are popular in this region and when the weather is good we can enjoy beach pastimes as well as coastal walks, cycling and hiking in the surrounding hills and infamous Welsh Valleys.

At least once a term we offer a City visit, some additional costs are required for trips to cover the transport requirements but we visit attractions such as Cardiff, Bath, Bristol, and London. Other school trips include the annual winter Ski Trip and we have various sport tournaments with a team this coming October going to Kenya to play cricket.

Over the mid-term breaks students may choose to remain in boarding as we do not close, but those students staying with us will be expected to participate in any organised activities.

Location:

The school is located in South Wales which is in the West of the UK. The school sits in the quiet but safe village of Bryn with Llanelli town a taxi ride away, the City of Swansea just 15 minutes by train, and Cardiff is reachable within the hour.  It is 3.5 hours by train to London.
We recommend that students from Thailand fly into London Heathrow and then transfer by taxi to the school. Once confident with your journey cheaper train line options are available to Llanelli or Swansea.

The Admissions Process:

Students are asked to submit school reports for the current and previous year and we will provide entrance test papers in both English and Maths. In cases where students need language support then this is assessed and provided alongside your academic studies.
