The College has maintained a strong student enrollment of over 1,000 students since 1992 before increased to over 1,860 students in 2018.

Wellington Secondary College is a large, vibrant multi-cultural government high school that enjoys strong links with other countries, like China, Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand. Students are encouraged to become fully involved in the life of the College. They will join a happy group of  international students who are totally integrated into mainstream classes.

All International students at Wellington choose a comprehensive Year 7 to 10 course or a full Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) program at Years 11-12. Mainstream classes are small (25 students) with a high level of student-teacher interaction to ensure more individual attention. The students will enjoy the benefits of extensive curriculum and co-curriculum programs in a supportive 21st Century learning environment that includes the following: accelerated learning by the early commencement of VCE or university subjects; challenging Sport, Music and Drama activities.  There is also an Intensive English Language Centre (WIELC) on site in our dedicated International Centre. Newly arrived international students are taught English before they transition into mainstream classes.

Students are able to study their first language as part of their VCE course. Students can choose to enrol at the Victorian School of Languages or at a registered third party provider such as Hoa Nghiem Vietnamese Language School or Xin Jin Shan Chinese Language and Culture School. Classes are held outside of normal school hours.

Homestay

At Wellington all homestays are carefully chosen by the Director, International Programs, enabling close relationships to form between families and the school.

When placing a student into a homestay, the first consideration is to match students preferences as much as possible. Families are carefully selected following a rigorous selection process according to International Division guidelines. This includes interviewing the family, carrying out “Working with Children” checks, Child Safety commitment and inspecting the home.

Homestay provides students with the best possible way to experience Australian culture and rapidly improve their English language. It is full board and accommodation offered by a family or couple of any nationality, for which a set weekly fee is charged.

Although our homestay homes can vary in size and location, they are all appropriate for the individual needs of the student.

Student Care

The International Programs team at the collage ensure that all students have access to a range of support services which includes multicultural aides, social and youth workers, medical specialists, careers guidance counsellors and community support groups. After school support homework clubs are available both at school and in the community free of charge. The welfare and happiness of every student is an important priority for all Wellington staff.
