มหาวิทยาลัย ลีเมอร์ริค ก่อตั้งในปี ค.ศ. 1972 เป็นสถาบันการศึกษา ระดับอุดมศึกษาแห่งชาติ และได้สถาปนาขึ้นเป็นมหาวิทยาลัยในปี ค.ศ. 1989
